Mental Health Newsletter - September

Hello CHS Students and Parents/Guardians,

Welcome to the new school year! I hope that you all had a wonderful and relaxing summer break and that you are adjusting well to the online learning environment. Please excuse my lengthy email but I encourage you to read the entire email as it contains important information. Thank you in advance!

For those of you who don't know me or are new to our school, my name is Ms. Alvarez and I am the Mental Health Professional at Cerritos High School. I know that there are several changes taking place this year especially school occurring virtually but I want you to know that you are not in this alone and that we are here to support you. We are a community and we need to stick together so we can overcome these challenges.
In order to best support you in this new learning environment, I want to share several of the mental health and social-emotional resources that we have readily available for all of you (students and parents/caregivers).
Enclosed in this email you will find a PDF version of this resource list that includes hyperlinks to easily access them. I highly encourage you to download the PDF file and keep it on your computer so that you can easily find it when you need any type of support and/or resources.

Furthermore, I want to share a new district-wide initiative regarding mental health that will begin this month. The district established Monthly Mental Health Awareness Themes and these themes are part of the ABC reopening focus on social-emotional learning (SEL) but also consistent with our District's and our principal's commitment to ongoing mental health awareness and support. Each monthly theme falls under one overarching theme of human rights and equality, justice, and dignity of human beings.

Through this initiative, we will be providing a forum for students to have a voice and to learn through Mental Health Professional outreach and SEL activities. Additionally, we will be providing monthly workshops for parents/caregivers to participate in the same conversation (e.g. grief awareness [November] so families can learn how to support bereaved students through that process). Enclosed you will find a list of the Mental Health Monthly Awareness Themes selected for the 2020 - 2021 academic school year. Each month there will be one theme consistent across the District and one parent (virtual) workshop that mirrors that focus. Please stay tuned for the upcoming calendar for these parent workshops as we are currently collaborating with the PTSA to identify the best dates and times for these virtual workshops.

Lastly, do not hesitate to reach out for support if needed. You can find my contact information below in my email signature. For your reference, my schedule is Monday to Friday from 8:00am - 4:30pm. Try to keep the lines of communication open with those around you. I am thinking of you all and am here to support you in any way that I possibly can. In case of a medical or mental health-related emergency, please call 911.
